When You Get Drawn into Other People's Drama: Protecting Your Boundaries and Peace of Mind

26/10/2025

It is natural to want to help when someone is in trouble. It is not about whether one is allowed or supposed to help – it is about holding on to one’s own boundaries. Especially in situations where things happen quickly and a lot of information is coming in, it is important to recognise the need to pause and make sense of things before jumping in.

Drama often brings strong emotions – excitement, a sense of meaning or a need to rescue. Unpleasant emotions, such as fear of loss, can also keep a tight grip. When reacting immediately, it is easy to commit to things before knowing what they actually require.

Imagine a situation: a friend says that the landlord of their business premises suddenly wants to change the contract. “No way! I could take a look at that contract right away, think about solutions and…” STOP. What just happened?

Is there a rush to get involved before there is time to pause? Are boundaries often stretched for the sake of others? Sudden situations, questions and an overflow of information can sometimes catch a neurodivergent person off guard. Processing information and forming one’s own opinion takes time. That is why it is helpful to give permission to step back, so that one’s own voice can be heard more clearly – in the midst of others’ expectations and demands.

5 ways to maintain boundaries and clarity

1. Pause before responding
Give permission not to react immediately. This does not mean indifference, but consideration.

2. Assess the current situation
Before committing, consider what resources (time, energy, money) are available.

3. Allow time to process
An overflow of information consumes energy. Allow a calm space in which there is time to organise the information and emotions.

4. Communicate boundaries clearly
If time is needed, say it out loud: “I want to think about this in peace, I will get back to it later.”

5. Withdraw when necessary
Physical and social withdrawal may be necessary in order to find one’s own perspective and make decisions calmly.

Reflection

If you wish, write down your thoughts:

  • How could you take a short pause today before responding to someone else's request?
  • What kind of space or moment would help you hear your own voice more clearly?

You are valuable even if you do nothing today.

Kaikki ei ole aina valmista. Eikä tarvitsekaan olla.
